Invention or Innovation?

What is brand new, what is improved โ€” and which one you see more of today

Two kinds of new

Every piece of technology around you, from your shoes to the bus, was designed by someone. But "new" comes in two flavors, and designers use two words for them.

An invention is something that did not exist before, in any form. Before 1876 no machine carried a voice over a wire; the telephone was an invention. Before the first practical light bulb, rooms were lit by fire. Thomas Edison ran hundreds of experiments before a bulb lasted long enough to sell โ€” an inventor is someone who keeps iterating until a brand-new thing finally works.

An innovation is an improvement to something that already exists: making it better, cheaper, smaller, safer, or useful in a new way. The LED bulb is an innovation on Edison's bulb โ€” same job, a tiny fraction of the energy. A running shoe with a waffle-pattern sole was an innovation on the sneaker.

From invention to innovation. The telephone was an invention: before 1876 nothing carried a voice over a wire. Everything since has kept that idea and improved it โ€” a phone you could carry, then one that was also a camera, a music player, and a computer. Almost all of modern technology is innovation on a few big inventions.

The phone in your pocket

Look at the timeline. There is one invention on it and then a century and a half of innovations. The handheld cell phone kept the idea of the telephone and cut the wire. The iPhone kept the cell phone and folded in a music player, a camera, a map, and the whole internet. Foldable screens and voice assistants are innovations on that. Each step felt huge, and each one was an improvement on something people already had.

Today: mostly innovation

Ask the question for the modern world: are we seeing more inventions or more innovations? Overwhelmingly, innovations. Televisions went from heavy glass tubes to flat panels to screens thin as a picture frame that stream from the internet โ€” innovation after innovation on one invention. A self-driving car is still a car, with cameras and software doing the steering. Electric cars are still cars. That is not a put-down. Innovation is how a rough first idea becomes something millions of people can use, and it is where most designers spend their careers.

Discovery is different again

Finding something that already existed in nature is a discovery, not an invention. Nobody invented gravity, electricity, or the mold that makes penicillin; people discovered them. Inventions use discoveries. The light bulb uses the discovery that electricity heats a wire.

Protecting an idea

A patent is a legal document that gives an inventor the right to be the only one making their invention for a set number of years. It rewards inventors by letting them earn back the time and money they spent, and it makes them publish how the thing works, so others can learn and innovate on it later.

Your first Craft Lab build will almost certainly be an innovation โ€” a better version of a stand, a box, a holder someone already made. That is exactly how most real designers work.

๐Ÿ”ค Words to know

Technology
Anything people design and make to solve a problem or meet a need โ€” tools, machines, products, systems.
Invention
Something that did not exist before, in any form โ€” a brand-new kind of thing.
Innovation
An improvement to something that already exists: better, cheaper, smaller, safer, or used a new way.
Inventor
A person who creates something new and keeps iterating until it works.
Discovery
Finding something that already existed in nature, like electricity or gravity โ€” not the same as inventing.
Patent
A legal right that lets an inventor be the only one to make their invention for a set number of years.
Improvement
A change that makes an existing design do its job better โ€” the heart of innovation.
Trial and error
Trying something, seeing what happens, and adjusting โ€” how Edison got to a working bulb.

๐Ÿ›  Mini activity: Sort the gadgets

Decide what counts as an invention, an innovation, or a discovery, using things from your own life, then put the phone timeline in order.

  1. 1
Invention or innovation? Sort each one.
๐Ÿ’ก Ask: did a thing like this exist before? If yes, improving it is innovation.
For each card, tap the bin it belongs in.
    A self-driving system added to a car
    The first practical light bulb
    A flat-screen TV replacing the glass-tube TV
    The first telephone (1876)
    A running shoe with a waffle-pattern sole
    The first wheel
The iPhone (phone + music + internet in one)
LED bulbs that use a tenth of the energy
    Invention
    Innovation
  2. 2
Which of these are discoveries โ€” found in nature, not made by people? Choose every one.
  3. 3
Tap the phone timeline in order, oldest first.
  4. 4
In the modern world, which do we see more of, and why? Choose the best answer.
